Discipline: Performing arts

Country: France

In 2026, “Transmission Impossible“ returns to the Festival d’Avignon. Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues is the artistic director of this new project, which will see 54 young artists, including 25 from the Foundation’s bursary programme, immerse themselves in the festival — a true laboratory for the performing arts.

Building on the first edition of Transmission Impossible, which debuted in 2024 by the Festival d’Avignon and the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès in collaboration with Mathilde Monnier, this new project will be led by Lia Rodrigues, accompanied by Silvia Soter da Silveira, Cristina Moura, Daniella Lima and Calixto Neto. This group of creators and teachers is close to the artist and shares the educational approach she has developed since founding the Escola Livre de Dança da Maré (ELDM) in 2011 in the Maré favela of Rio de Janeiro. From July 3 to 15, 2026, these renowned professionals will work alongside the project’s young participants. Together they will explore the festival’s international programme, broaden their understanding of the professional field and explore the processes of transmission at work in the performing art. The experience will also help participants gain a firmer grasp of the range of careers possible in the sector.

To this end, the group of young artists will be able to enjoy special access to the Festival d’Avignon, attending performances, rehearsals and encounters with participating performers. Daily workshops designed to help them hone their skills and undertake collective artistic research will culminate on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at 8 pm at Le Mahabharata, where students from the Foundation’s bursary programme and other guest students will propose a new collective work based on their “embedded” experience of the festival. Hybrid by nature, this critical yet sensitive synthesis aims to give voice to the aspirations and ideas of a young generation of artists as they engage with the most vibrant aspects of the contemporary art scene. As part of the Festival d’Avignon’s official programme, Transmission Impossible also serves as a real springboard for these young artists into professional networks.

After Panorama in 2022 at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris, Sweat, Glitter and Moolah in 2023 at Les Subs in Lyon, Transmission Impossible in 2024 at the Festival d’Avignon and Avant toute chose at the MC93 – Maison de la Culture de Seine-Saint-Denis in Bobigny in 2025, Transmission Impossible 2026 offers a new generation of young talents the chance to take their first steps on stage. The project reflects the commitment of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès to promoting equal opportunities and renewing the performing arts scene through its Artists in the Community programme.
