Training new talent: Transforme
Young choreographers at the Abbaye de Royaumont
"Transforme" is a platform for exchange between dance, music, and new technologies, at the Fondation Royaumont's Centre de Recherche et de Composition Chorégraphiques (CRCC). Dancer and choreographer Myriam Gourfink is its driving force.
Every year, twelve international choreographers attend the CRCC's course, designed to enrich their knowledge and expertise, their intellectual and artistic output. Teaching focuses on a central theme related to writing and modes of composition in dance and music alike: "space" in 2008-2009, and "perception" in 2009-2010 (exploring the five senses). In 2010-2011, participants reflect on "extending the self".

In the first of four sessions, artists, scientists and philosophers explore the course's theme and the relationships between dance, music and new technologies. Next, students are encouraged to formalise their personal language and develop a project resonating with the theme's core issues.

Based on the originality, quality and relevance of these projects, the CRCC may offer further, tailored support: a residency for writing, research or production, and a performance of the resulting work during the annual music season at Royaumont.

The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports the activities of Transforme. "There are very few training opportunities for young choreographers in France," explains the Fondation's director, Catherine Tsékénis, "and the union forged here between music and dance is something very close to our heart."
